Identity theft, freezes and data breaches
In one minute
A credit freeze is free and stops new accounts from being opened in your name. If someone already used your identity, go to IdentityTheft.gov for a free recovery plan.
Credit freeze: the lock
While a freeze is on, nobody can open a new credit account in your name, including you. It is free to place and free to lift, and it lasts until you lift it. You have to contact each of the three bureaus.
Fraud alert: the note on your file
A fraud alert tells businesses to check with you before opening new credit in your name. It is free and lasts one year. You contact one bureau, and it must tell the other two. Identity theft victims with an FTC or police report can get an extended alert for seven years.
If your data was in a breach
Watch your financial accounts for anything strange, review your credit reports, and consider a freeze or a fraud alert.
If someone used your identity
- Report it at IdentityTheft.gov or, in Spanish, RobodeIdentidad.gov. You get a free personal recovery plan.
- Use the letters the site prepares for the bureaus, businesses and collectors.
- Place a freeze or a fraud alert.
The FTC warns about anyone who tells you to file a false identity theft report. That is a sign of a scam.
Pro tip
Freeze all three bureaus. When you apply for a loan, ask which bureau the lender will check and lift only that one.
Try it today
Place a freeze today, one bureau at a time: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion.

How much does a credit freeze cost?
A company tells you to report a real account of yours as identity theft. What is that?
Where this comes from
