Dispute an error yourself, for free
In one minute
If something on your report is wrong, you can dispute it for free with the credit bureau and with the business that reported it. Explain the error, send copies, and keep records.
Six steps
- Pick what is truly wrong. Dispute only what is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Gather your proof. Make copies of your documents. Never send originals.
- Write to each bureau that shows the error. Include your full name and address, each error and why it is wrong, and a copy of your report with the errors circled. Each bureau also takes disputes online and by phone.
- Keep a record. If you mail it, use certified mail with a return receipt, and save a copy of everything.
- Write to the business that reported it too. Find the dispute address on your report, or ask the business for it.
- Read the answer. The bureau has 30 days to investigate. It must give you the results in writing. If your file changes, you get a free updated report.
Where to mail a dispute

If it does not get fixed

- Ask the bureau to add a short statement of your dispute to your file.
- File a free complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Pro tip
After your dispute, check your report to confirm the error was removed. If the item is still there, confirm it shows a notice that you dispute it.

Where this comes from
